ピザは、イタリア南部の都市ナポリを中心とするカンパニア地方の郷土料理であった。この食べ物が19世紀末から20世紀初めにかけてアメリカに渡ったイタリア移民の日常食として定着し、アメリカの人気メニューとなった。 日本にこのピザが伝えられたのは戦後である。駐留在日のイタリア系アメリカ人、ニコラザペティ氏が東京麻布台に「ニコラス」を開いたのが本格的上陸となった。その意味で言えば、日本に広まったピザはアメリカの味だったとも言える。 ニコラスは、戦後の国民的ヒーローであったプロレスの力道山を始めとする著名人が頻繁に訪れる都心の名スポットとなった。 2004年で創業30周年を迎えたニコラスでは、開店当初から50種類のピザを提供していた。阪神タイガースの人気選手だった田淵幸一氏は、自らの背番号にちなみ、22番テーブルでナンバー22のピザを来店の度に注文したそうだ。 このように、ピザは元々、イタリアから伝えられてきた食べ物だったのである。 |
